Kingswood College founded by Sir Louis Edmund Blaze is one of the oldest schools in Kandy, which is well known for both her academic and sports achievements. We are very proud to be the first school in Sri Lanka to play Rugby as a sport back in 1893. Rugby was introduced by our founder principal Sir L E Blaze, and we played our very first Senior School Rugby match in the country against our hometown rivals Trinity College in 1906. Over the last century, the school has excelled in the sport of Rugby and holds a unique passion and culture of Rugby in school, which is undoubtedly the most popular sport at Kingswood. On the other hand, Kandy is regarded as the Rugby City of Sri Lanka and Kingswood Rugby has played a pivotal role by producing many outstanding players in the past not only for Kandy but also served the National Rugby teams. Noticeable Rugby achievements of Kingswood 1st XV team are as follows: 2016- All island under 18 champions 2017- Div B league champions 2019- Plate Champions 2020- Won the only match played due to Covid 19 with St. Joseph’s College Products of Kingswood Rugby It is pertinent to mention here that that Kingswood College has produced more than 50 national players including a few captains, therby rendering an invaluable service to sustain and develop the sport of Rugby in Sri Lanka. Fazil Marija, Nalaka Weerakkody, Nilfer Ibrahim, Roshan and Gayan Weerarathne brothers, Chamara Withanage, Amjad Buks, just to name a few. We are also proud to mention that there are National and International coaches and trainers produced by Kingswood too. They were attached to leading schools, clubs and even the National levels and have earned many championships under them. Ananda Kasthuriarachchi, Ronnie Ibrahim, Mothilal Jayathilake, Nilfer Ibrahim, Nalaka Weerakkody, Fazil Marija, Ransilu Jayathilake are few of those outstanding coaches produced by Kingswood College for the country. Continuing with the Rugby culture, we also have produced a few renowned Rugby refrees who have served the country both locally and internationally. A.C. Tennakoon, Irshad Cader, Asela Muthumala, Mahesh Senanayake, Harshana Wijeweera and Ranil De Silva are a few known names amongst them. Although Mr. Ranjith Chandrasekara doesn’t happen to be an old boy of Kingswood, during his tenure as the Principal of Kingswood College, he gained a wealth of experience there, paving the way to become the president of the School Rugby Union on many occasions. Furthermore, in the year 2018, Kingswood gentleman R. Lakshan Chandrarathne and in the year 2019, Kingswood gentlemen W.A. Senevirathne, Milan Weerasinghe, K.D.S. Ekanayake participated inthe under 19 Asian Rugby Tournament held in China representing Sri Lanka and were awarded with national colours for their performance.
